This is a famous Navarasa shloka from the ancient Sanskrit work, Soundarya Lahari by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. The composition speaks about the eight emotional states Parvathi experiences as she looks at her beloved Shiva.
Darus', commonly used in dance dramas, are basically a story-song narrating an event. Sri Harikesanallur Muthayya Bhagavatar who was a musician in the court of Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar, the Maharaja of Mysore, has composed four Daru Varnas. We present one of his composition, Maathey in praise of Goddesss Meenakshi in the ragam Kamas set to Adi taalam.
